The Engineer’s Seat

Have you ever wanted to know what it’s like to sit in the engineer’s seat and pull open the throttle and feel the power of a steam locomotive at your fingertips? This 30-minute experience puts you in control on the rails of America’s oldest operating railroad. You’ll receive an orientation to the controls and then you’ll be off, taking direction from a certified steam locomotive engineer.

Price: $450

Participants must be 18 years of age or older and have a valid Driver’s License. Each participant will receive a certificate and pin.

The Fireman’s Seat

You might think that firing a steam locomotive is nothing more than shoveling coal, but there is so much more to it than that. Reading the fire, anticipating the demand for steam and the amount of water needed to make up for what is being used are all skills that take time for a good fireman to develop. This rare 30-minute experience provides the opportunity to serve as a locomotive fireman and will give you a glimpse of what it takes to keep the pressure up. After a short orientation, you will get to follow the instructions of an experienced steam locomotive fireman to see if you have what it takes!

Price: $275

Participants must be 18 years of age or older. Each participant will receive a certificate and pin.

The Jump Seat

In the heyday of steam railroading, every locomotive cab had an extra seat for the head-end brakeman to ride. We’re offering you the chance to take a ride along as part of our exclusive in-cab experiences. Enjoy 30 minutes in the cab and experience the sounds and smells of the engine while the art of steam locomotive operation unfolds before your eyes!

Price: $125

Participants must be 18 years of age or older. Each participant will receive a certificate and pin.

History

Built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works of Philadelphia in June of 1906 and run on the Norfolk & Western Railroad as a mixed-use engine until 1962, No. 475 is Strasburg Rail Road’s oldest and second-largest steam locomotive. No. 475’s unusual 4-8-0 wheel configuration makes her known as a “Mastodon” or “M-Class” locomotive. She is the only 4-8-0 class locomotive currently operating in North America! She is also one of the last surviving examples of a Norfolk & Western Railroad locomotive. No. 475 arrived in Strasburg in 1991 after the railroad purchased the locomotive for a mere $100,000. After an approximate $640,000 extensive overhaul and restoration, she pulled her first passenger train on Strasburg’s line in the fall of 1993. No. 475 was made famous for her role in the movie, Thomas and the Magic Railroad. No. 475’s size and ability to pull nearly any size train makes her a “go-to” locomotive for nearly any need Strasburg may have—passenger, freight, or otherwise.
