The Strasburg Rail Road’s mechanical team has over 250 years of combined experience in steam locomotive repair and design and the repair and construction of heritage/historical railroad equipment.
Our mechanical departments 30,000 sf facility consists of a machine shop, boiler shop, weld shop, fabrication shop, carpentry shop and a paint shop. This enables our mechanical department to manufacture and repair almost any type of mechanical equipment.

For more than 60 years, the mechanical department of the Strasburg Rail Road has been producing world-class work in the steam railroading industry. The mechanical services department has over 250 years of combined expertise in steam locomotive construction, design and repair.
With a capable and versatile mechanical department consisting of a machine shop, weld shop, fabrication shop, carpentry shop, boiler shop and paint shop, the Strasburg Rail Road is able to manufacture and repair almost any type of mechanical equipment.
The Strasburg Rail Road’s mechanical department’s 30,000 Sq Ft facility is packed full of equipment to tackle any project. Our assortment of metalworking machinery, fabrication equipment, boiler tools, and woodworking equipment set us apart from most heritage railroad shops. To complement that equipment, our design and engineering staff is proficient in the use of state-of-the-art CAD drafting software and CAM machining.
The Strasburg Rail Road’s boiler shop is the first steam railroad shop in the United States to hold the ASME “S” and NBIC “R” stamps. Our position as a “code” shop allows us to design and build as well as perform repairs and alterations on boilers in any jurisdiction in the country.
The Strasburg Rail Road’s mechanical services department is also your source for reproduction staybolts, staybolt accessories, raw boiler material, boiler tubes and flues.
Our car shop specializes in the replication and restoration of wooden coaches and rolling stock from the 19th and early 20th century. We have the capability to work from the rails up, from design, truck, frame, brake and coupler work to fine millwork, decorative stenciling and hand lettering. We can perform consultative evaluations and estimates of the condition of wooden cars for restoration.
We have a team of experts in all aspects of steam powered locomotives and historical rail car restorations and repairs. Our staff will travel to your location to inspect, photograph, and measure your equipment and use that information to provide you with a scope of work as large or as small as your dreams and your budget allow. We also regularly perform FRA Form No. 4 calculations for certification of locomotive boilers.
