Contact us today and let us supply you with a customized solution to your manufacturing needs!

Capabilities & Equipment

With more than 250 years of combined experience in steam locomotive repair and design, construction of heritage and historical railroad equipment, the Strasburg Rail Road's mechanical department is able to get your equipment "on the road." We will be glad to address any technical questions or problems you may have with your roster.

New Construction of Locomotive Equipment

Deterioration due to the passage of time, the need to meet modern requirements or produce a modern design, a desire to preserve the "historic fabric" of an original piece, or the fundamental absence of an original to restore are all reasons to seriously consider having the Strasburg Rail Road design and construct a reproduction or new design to meet your specifications.

Historic Railroad Reproduction Parts

Over the years, continuous operation of historic railroad equipment takes its toll. Many of the parts the Strasburg Rail Road has available are a result of the necessity for us to keep our own equipment operating, while others were developed as part of specific orders from others. By making these parts available commercially, we hope to save others the expense of "reinventing the wheel."

Steam Locomotive Overhaul

Properly repaired, reliable and smooth-running machinery under your locomotive can make the difference between a successful, profitable season and one filled with headaches caused by delayed and canceled trains. Once properly overhauled, a steam locomotive's running gear can last for many seasons with minimal expense, provided it is cared for and operated in a responsible manner.

Steam Engine Boiler Work

The Strasburg Rail Road's boiler shop is the first steam railroad shop in the United States to hold the ASME "S" and NBIC "R" stamps. Our position as a "code" shop allows us to design and build as well as perform repairs and alterations on boilers in any jurisdiction in the country.

Wooden Railroad Car Repair

The Strasburg Rail Road's car shop specializes in the replication and restoration of wooden coaches and rolling stock from the 19th and early 20th century. We have the capability to work from the rails up, from design, truck, frame, brake and coupler work, to fine millwork, decorative stenciling and hand lettering. We can perform evaluations and estimates of the condition of wooden cars for restoration.

Historic Railroad Restoration

The Strasburg Rail Road is capable of complete restorations from the rails up on any equipment that can be transported to our facility. We work exclusively with a company with extensive experience in rigging, lifting and securing railroad equipment for safe shipment, all of which are available when your organization is considering sending a project to us. We can bring our entire pool of talent and knowledge to bear, allowing us to work very efficiently. Having the entire restoration done by us in this way ensures a harmonious outcome from coupler to coupler.

There are two types of consultants: those that charge a lot of money to tell you what you want to hear, and those that tell you the truth. Our industry doesn't have the excess capital to spend on "politically correct" consulting. As a rule we don't like consultants, but sometimes having them is a really good idea. If you want the straight story - warts and all - we will give it to you without spending a fortune.
