Plymouth No. 1
In 1926, after determining that steam was too expensive to run at the Strasburg Rail Road due to the lack of passengers and dwindling freight revenue, the Homshers (John G. and his two sons, Fred, and John E.) purchased a new 20-ton Plymouth locomotive as their sole motive power, thus making the Strasburg Rail Road one of the first railroads in the United States to completely divest itself of steam motive power. The Plymouth arrived in Strasburg in October 1926.

Built by the Plymouth Locomotive Works (Fate-Root-Heath Company) of Plymouth, Ohio, to date, it is the only locomotive Strasburg Rail Road ever bought brand new. For the next 34 years, the little Plymouth served the Strasburg Rail Road — through thick and thin — until “steam struck back” in 1960. The locomotive has remained an active piece on the railroad’s roster since 1926 and is one of the last tangible relics of the pre-tourist era.

About
Secure your place trackside as “Steam Strikes Back”! Under the direction of Mr. Chris Pollock and Strasburg Rail Road leadership, these special Friday night and Saturday photo sessions will be a rare treat. Photographers will have a historic opportunity to capture recreations of views and vignettes from Strasburg’s past!

60th Anniversary of Steam
From the beginning, the group of railfans who revived the company in 1958 wanted a “real Casey Jones locomotive” for their railroad. Their desire came to fruition in the fall of 1960 when the Strasburg Rail Road became the first railroad in America to return a steam locomotive to I.C.C. (now FRA) passenger service. Since then, Strasburg Rail Road has scheduled steam continuously for its passenger service and has positioned itself as a leader in steam locomotive preservation and use. With a world-renowned mechanical and restoration shop and operating one of America’s largest fleets, Strasburg Rail Road is often called “the gold standard” of heritage railroads.

In commemoration of the 60th anniversary of reintroducing steam to this line (or as we call it “Steam Strikes Back” after decades of gasoline power), this series of unique photo sessions will relive some of the early days of steam passenger operations at the Strasburg Rail Road.

Episode 1 will include a combination of locomotives No. 1, No. 89 and No. 90. Episodes 2 and 3 will include locomotives No. 89 and No. 90.  Note: Locomotive liveries and consists are sill being determined. Details will be shared with ticket holders closer to the event.
